As nature retreats into its winter slumber, so do we… until the days grow long and everything turns green again. If you’ve spent any time in Luxembourg, you know the drill: dark skies, weeks of drizzle, muddy trails, and forests that look like they’ve given up. A white Christmas is a rare gift, and snow that sticks around is more of a legend than a forecast.
So what’s a hiker to do?

If the grey skies get too heavy, why not trade them for the lush, green trails of Madeira? A hike there is planned for Jan/Feb 2027 – a perfect way to break the gloom and recharge. More details coming soon!
Briefly this is going to be a long weekend type event, there are regular cheap night flights from Luxembourg to Madeira, through Lisbon. We fly there on a Thursday night, Levada hike on Friday, Levada hike on Saturday, chill-out on the beach on Sunday and fly back. Difficulty wise don’t expect much, unless we do the Pico Ruivo, standing at 1,861 meters. These Levada hikes are easy-going and suitable for all fitness levels – more of a scenic stroll than a strenuous challenge. Just come along, enjoy the views, and take it easy.
🌱 When Do Regular Hikes Resume?
If 2027 gives us another late spring (like this year, when trees stayed bare until May and ice wreaked havoc), the hikes simply wait until everything is green again – likely May. We go when nature is ready, and so do we.
