FAQ

You can find useful information here what to bring for the hiking/biking events.

What to bring to the hikes

Depending on the weather:

  • Hiking poles
  • Hiking boots
  • Passport/ID card (when we cross country borders)
  • Coat, soft gloves for colder weather
  • Always useful to have some cash with you (EUR)
  • If you have battery pack that will be useful for whole day hikes
  • Spray against ticks on the summer
  • Raincoat (in case of rain)
  • Always have enough water (on the summer at least 2L/person because this area does not have fresh spring water)
  • Snacks and food (usually there is a lunch break at the middle of the hikes)

Transportation related

Deutschland Ticket 101:

For months with frequent hikes in Germany, the Deutschland-Ticket (monthly Germany-wide public transport subscription) may be more economical than single tickets.

How to buy the Deutschland Ticket?

  • It is a subscription that renews automatically each month.

  • To cancel for the following month, you must do so before the 10th of the current month.

  • Purchase and management are handled directly through the DB Navigator app and require identity verification. For a streamlined process, we recommend using the Verimi Wallet app to verify your ID card and create an EU Digital Identity. This allows you to bypass the full verification process for future purchases.

Alltrails also only cost 35 EUR per year and have many advantages for example you are able to download the maps and navigate them offline without any internet on your phone (this can be useful in north Luxembourg areas for example where there is often no cell coverage). In the free version of Alltrails you will not be able to import the GPXes provided on this site, for that see the recommended GPX viewers in this section.

Hiking Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is the number 1 rule on all of the hikes?
None of the hikes are guided hikes. All participants are expected to have some hiking experience and must assess their own fitness and ability to complete the route safely. The organizer assumes no responsibility for any injuries or their consequences!

  • Is signing up for the hikes mandatory?
YES, since we are building a strong community from the regular members, it is now mandatory to register for any events you are attending. Bringing 1 or more guests is always OK and does not need to be announced; however, if something comes up, you must cancel your signup on the page (one hour before, the latest). If nobody signs up for an event or there is low participation the event will be moved further to the future.

  • How does carpooling work?
Carpooling is now integrated into the website. Just follow the same rules: as a passenger, make sure you notify your driver in time (preferably at least 1 day in advance) in case you are not coming to the event. As a driver, ONLY sign up for the carpool if you are 100% sure you are participating; if not, you will have to notify all your passengers ahead of time that you will not participate in order to be able to delete your car registration from the website.

  • When are the hikes posted?
This has changed. With the new hike polls, hikes may be posted a month in advance; however, check back 1 day before the event to see if it is still ongoing (in case of bad weather it might be postponed).

  • When are the hikes happening?
The hikes are on Saturdays/Sundays but can be on other holidays as well.

  • Will the advertised hike be kept?
The hikes which are advertised are ALWAYS kept; If there is not enough interest or the weather turns really bad, then they might be moved +1, +2, or +3 weeks ahead. With the new system, you can subscribe to the calendar for individual events or whole categories (e.g., in Outlook or Google Calendar); this will send you automatic reminders before the events and notifications about cancellations or date changes. It is good practice to visit the site 1 day before the event to see if there were any changes.

  • What happens if you get there late?
Normally, waiting for 10-20 minutes is not an issue; after that, you can follow us with your favorite app. The GPX file will always be posted on the site.

  • What happens if you ignore the cancellation and go there or you go at the wrong time/day, etc.?
You can do the hike on your own by using the route (GPX file).

  • What app can I use to open the GPX files?
    Android: OsmAnd~ (4.5★), GPX Viewer (4.3★), Organic Maps (4.8★), Locus Map (4.2★), Guru Maps (4.4★) | iOS: GPX Tracker (4.6★), GPX Viewer (4.3★), AllTrails (4.8★), Footpath (4.9★), ViewRanger (4.5★)

  • Can I be an organizer or contributor?
Absolutely. Just hike with us 10 times and you will be.

  • Can I join for international events if I have never attended any events with the group?
Participation in international events is reserved for members who have first attended local events. This ensures all participants are familiar with the group’s pace, safety expectations, and dynamics.

  • Are the hikes seasonal?
Yes, they are. The regular hiking season runs from March through October. Winter conditions (including darkness, mud, ice, and rain) make organized hikes less feasible. However, festive seasonal walks (e.g., Christmas markets) may be arranged in winter if there is sufficient interest and fair weather.

Biking Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is the most important rule for all bike events?
Biking is a higher-speed activity and is therefore considered to carry more inherent risk than hiking. The primary rule is doubled in importance: All participants are expected to have prior biking experience and must personally assess their own fitness and ability to complete the route safely. The organizer assumes no responsibility for any injuries or their consequences.

  • What safety equipment is required?
Protective eyewear is mandatory. Helmets, gloves, and knee pads are highly recommended.

  • What is the riding style and pace for group events?
Please note: while routes in North Luxembourg can feature steep descents, this group ride maintains a steady, social pace. High-speed descents, technical maneuvers, or stunts are not permitted. The focus is on collective safety and enjoyment. Approximately 80% of the route is on flat terrain, with an average pace of 20km/h to accommodate all participants.

  • Do bike events happen in the rain?
No. For the safety of participants and the protection of bicycles, organized group rides are canceled in the event of rain.

  • How much food and water should I bring?
You are responsible for bringing what you need. Unlike hiking, distances are covered more quickly by bike, and stops at shops or gas stations are typically possible. An increasing number of cycling repair stations with water taps are also available throughout Luxembourg.

  • What should I bring for bike repairs?

    • For standard bikes (with inner tubes): Bring at least two spare inner tubes that match your tires. It is common for both wheels to encounter the same hazard. While not mandatory, carrying a pump is advisable.

    • For tubeless bikes: Bring your own tubeless repair kit.
In either case, if a repair on the trail exceeds roughly 30 minutes or involves a major mechanical failure (e.g., a broken chain), the group may need to continue. Luxembourg’s comprehensive bus and train network means you are likely within a short walk of a transport option to return home.

  • Are the bike events seasonal?
Yes. The organized bike event season runs from March through October. Events are not scheduled outside of this period.
